The Reckoners Book #1

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Ghost hunter Lisa McGarrity can't understand what's gotten into the undead recently, Ectoplasm-flinging spirits and ghouls with grudges seem to be coming out of the woodwork, and her small business has been run ragged as she does her best to calm the outraged spirits. When the mysterious and sexy Trevarr appears on her doorstep, Lisa is suspicious. Why is he so interested in her 'kooky' hobby? What does he have to gain by visiting paranormal hot spots with her? Whatever he wants, Lisa can't help being drawn to Trevarr, and as they start working together together to figure out this ghost population explosion, their mutual attraction causes explosions of its own.

I found the dialogue hard to follow, I would have to go back and read over a passage I just read to try and figure out who was talking and what they were talking about. Also the POV were really jumpy and made me wonder if I missed a page in between. Its classified as a Paranormal Romance but truthfully there isn't much of a romance. Lisa (Garrie) and Trevarr are hot for each other sure but all they really share is a steamy kiss a few times in the whole book. I liked the story, the characters were like-able and there was some great action, but the execution of everything was rough around the edges. The author left a lot of things I felt I needed to know out, Maybe it will be in STORM OF RECKONING? My overall opinion? I would MAYBE borrow it from the library ,but would not purchase myself a copy.

I gave it a 2.5/5

Publisher: Signet
The Awakening Book #1
ISBN:  0451232461

Genre: Paranormal Romance

In the ten years since magic has reemerged in the world, witches have become feared and hunted. For weeks Shea Jameson has been haunted by visions of fire. When she unintentionally performs a spell in public, she becomes one of the hunted. Her only hope is Torin, a dangerously sensual man who claims to be her eternal mate.

I liked it but I didn't love it. I liked the whole concept of the story, The witch was naughty a long time ago and gave up her power for a really long time and is now awakening to herself again. Her eternal is there for her in everything as she completes a task of atonement. There is some awesome world building, everything comes off as realistic as it can be with all the detail Regan Hastings has put into it. I had no problem imagining the people and places that were described. The chemistry between Shea and Torin is HOT and there is a lot of sex so be ready. I found side plots to be left to the imagination and I'm not a fan of that. I know this will be one of those series that has a new couple per book but there was a lot of little information's I would have liked to know now that might have made the story stick to me a little more. All in all its worth reading and I'll read VISIONS OF SKYFIRE when it comes out October of 2011.

I gave it a 3.5/5

This weeks question comes from

"What is/was your favorite subject in school?"

School EEK. Um I dont think I really ever had a favorite subject, there were classes I liked way more then others because of the teachers. One that sticks out was American History. The teacher was young and brand new but had a wonderful personality and made class fun to be in while we learned.

Review: Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Hex Hall
Author:Rachel Hawkins
Release Date: March 2, 2010
Publisher: Hyperion Books for Children
Hex Hall Book #1
ISBN:   1423121309
ISBN13: 9781423121305
Genre: Young Adult

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

I just recently heard of the Hex Hall Series and after reading great reviews I thought I would give it a try. I thought Sophie was a wonderful main character she was sarcastic, funny and down to earth. There were a few points in the book that my Husband looked over at me like I had lost my mind because I was cracking up so hard from all her witty comments and funny situations. HEX HALL was a fast fun read filled with tension, mystery, comic relief, great characters, a fantastic storyline and situations I had no problem picturing. There are some great twists I didn't expect and there is a big cliffhanger at the end that I wish wasn't so big that makes waiting for DEMONGLASS a tad bit harder.

Review: The Iron Witch by Karen Mahoney

The Iron Witch
Author:Karen Mahoney
Release Date: January 25, 2011
Publisher: Flux
The Iron Witch Saga Book #1
ISBN:  073872582X
ISBN13: 9780738725826
Genre: Young Adult

FREAK. That’s what her classmates call seventeen-year-old Donna Underwood. When she was seven, a horrific fey attack killed her father and drove her mother mad. Donna’s own nearly fatal injuries from the assault were fixed by magic—the iron tattoos branding her hands and arms. The child of alchemists, Donna feels cursed by the magical heritage that destroyed her parents and any chance she had for a normal life. The only thing that keeps her sane and grounded is her relationship with her best friend, Navin Sharma.

When the darkest outcasts of Faerie—the vicious wood elves—abduct Navin, Donna finally has to accept her role in the centuries old war between the humans and the fey. Assisted by Xan, a gorgeous half-fey dropout with secrets of his own, Donna races to save her friend—even if it means betraying everything her parents and the alchemist community fought to the death to protect.

This is one of those books that I picked up purely for the fact that I loved the cover. After reading the summery I thought it interesting enough to read. THE IRON WITCH is paced well with plenty of things happening to keep you in the mood to read it. The characters are like able and easy to connect with. The ending for me fell completely flat, I know this is part of a series but the ending totally left me wondering what happened to the ending.  You know when you read a book and you expect there to be pages left only to have it end while your still waiting for the ending? If that at all made sense that is how I felt with THE IRON WITCH. I will still be looking for book two when it releases as the story was good and I want to know more about Donna, her parents, and what the wood elves have to reveal about Donna's past.

Review: Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning

Shadowfever
Author:Karen Marie Moning
Release Date: January 18, 2011
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Fever Book #5
ISBN:   0385341679
ISBN13: 9780385341677
Genre: Urban Fantasy

MacKayla Lane was just a child when she and her sister, Alina were given up for adoption and banished from Ireland forever.

Twenty years later, Alina is dead and Mac has returned to the country that expelled them to hunt her sister's murderer. But after discovering that she descends from a bloodline both gifted and cursed, Mac is plunged into a secret history: an ancient conflict between humans and immortals that have lived concealed among us for thousands of years.

What follows is a shocking chain of events with devastating consequences, and now Mac struggles to cope with grief, while continuing her mission to acquire and control the Sinsar Dubh--a book of dark, forbidden magic scribed by the mythical Unseelie King that contains the power to create and destroy worlds.

In an epic battle between humans and Fae, the hunter becomes the hunted when the Sinsar Dubh turns on Mac, and begins mowing a deadly path through those she loves.
Who can she turn to? Who can she trust? Who is the woman that haunts her dreams? More importantly, who is Mac and what is the destiny she glimpses in the black and crimson designs of an ancient tarot card?

From the luxury of the Lord Master's penthouse, to the sordid depths of an Unseelie nightclub, from the erotic bed of her lover, to the terrifying bed of the Unseelie King, Mac's journey will force her to face the truth of her exile, and make a choice that will either save the world...or destroy it.

What a ride the Fever series has been. I am sad that SHADOWFEVER was the last book but I was blown away and couldn't have asked for a better last book. Everything you have been questioning or wondering about will be answered and I'm telling you you will have never guessed the things that are revealed. I am on information overload with all the revelations. I couldn't read this fast enough. I was so mad at the book in the first part but I slowly made my way back as I was reading on. I dont think I have never read about more stubborn characters in a series then what the characters were like in SHADOWFEVER, I wanted to jump in the book and smack them across the head. I dont want to list any spoilers so I will leave off saying WOW what a ride!! If you haven't picked uo and started reading the Fever series you are missing out on a fabulous series, I think I might have to start over and read the books again to see what clues I might have missed.

Nightshade/Jillian Conrad Book #1

Genre: Paranormal Romance

DESIRE IS IN THE BLOOD

Jillian Conrad never believed in vampires. But she’s just become a living, breathing weapon against them. Attacked by a desperate scientist, she is injected with a serum that was supposed to act as a deadly poison to vampires. And when the scientist is gunned down in front of her, his secrets die with him.

Declan Reese was only half-vampire, but he hates them with all his heart. He knows that the poison in Jillian’s veins could finally destroy the undead kingdom. Also, the serum has had an unintended effect, making her blood irresistible to all vampires—including Declan, whose bloodthirsty traits are driven into a frenzy by her.

Driven by duty to protect her and by instinct to crave her, Declan takes Jillian into his shadowy world of blood and battle. But he soon realizes his increasing need for her may be a different kind of hunger…

Michelle Rowan decided to go a little darker and she pulled it off!! The Characters are all interesting and easy to like. The world building was fantastic, I could see myself in the places that were described with no difficulties. There was a lot of action. The main characters Jillian and Declan had wonderful chemistry. There is of course a big part of the book based on a budding romance but the action and storyline made the book so much more then just a romance in my opinion. The one bad thing about reading a book early is that you have to wait so much longer for the next book. BLOODLUST is scheduled to come out July 2011 and I will be pre-ordering it.

Review: Taken by the Others by Jess Haines

Taken By the Others
Author:Jess Haines
Release Date: January 4, 2011
Publisher: Zebra
H & W Investigations Book #2
ISBN:  1420111884
ISBN13: 9781420111880
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Jess Haines draws readers deep into the mesmerizing world of the Others–werewolves, vampires, and mages who make their home among humans, and are turning Shiarra Waynest’s life upside down…
Once, New York P.I. Shiarra Waynest’s most pressing problem was keeping her agency afloat. Now she’s dealing with two dangerous, seductive vampires who have been enemies for centuries. The only thing Max Carlyle and Alec Royce agree on is that they both want Shia–for very different reasons.
Max is determined to destroy Shia for killing his progeny, while Royce’s interest is a lot more personal. That’s not sitting well with Shia’s werewolf boyfriend, Chaz. As the feud between Max and Royce gets ever more deadly, a powerful vampire-hunting faction is urging Shia to join their side. Shia has always believed vamps were the bad guys, but she’s discovering unexpected shades of grey that are about to redefine her friends, her loyalties–and even her desires.

TAKEN BY THE OTHERS is jam packed full of action. Shia seriously just rocks, I love her character. The tension between Royce and Shia is killing me (in a good way), I just cant wait to see what comes of these two. Will they become friends? More than friends? I'm seriously dying to find out what comes next with them. I have to say I'm kind of disappointed in Chaz at the end, you think even though he was hurting he might be a tad bit more supportive, its not like Shia has asked to be in any of the situations she was put in. I enjoyed the white hats in book 2, It was neat to get to know them more and I'm sure we will get more in the future. The dialogue is always fantastic coming from Jess Haines she knows how to keep you entertained and wanting more. You will not be disappointing in picking up any of Jess's books, start with HUNTED BY THE OTHERS, Follow with TAKEN BY THE OTHERS and make sure to pre-order the next book in the series DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS you wont want to miss it

Review: Awakened by P.C. Cast, Kristin Cast

Awakened
Author:P.C.Cast , Kristin Cast
Release Date: January 4, 2011
Publisher: St. Martin's
House Of Night Book #8
ISBN:  0312650248
ISBN13:  9780312650247
Genre: Young Adult

Zoey has returned from the Otherworld to her rightful place as High Priestess at the House of Night. Her friends are just glad to have her back, but after losing her human consort, Heath, will Zoey--or her relationship with her super-hot Warrior, Stark--ever be the same?

“My love, speak to me.  Tell me everything.”  Neferet went to Kalona, kneeling before him, stroking the soft, dark wings that unfurled loosely around the immortal.

“What would you have me say?”  He didn’t meet her eyes.

“Zoey lives.” Neferet’s voice was flat, cold, lifeless.

“She does.”

“Then you owe me the subservience of your immortal soul.”  She started to walk away from him.

“Where are you going?  What will happen next?”

“It is quite simple.  I will ensure Zoey is drawn back to Oklahoma.  There, on my own terms, I will complete the task you failed.”
Exonerated by the Vampyre High Council and returned to her position of High Priestess at Tulsa’s House of Night, Neferet has sworn vengeance on Zoey.  Dominion over Kalona is only one of the weapons she plans to use against Z.  But Zoey has found sanctuary on the Isle of Skye and is being groomed by Queen Sgiach to take over for her there.  Being Queen would be cool, wouldn’t it?  Why should she return to Tulsa? After losing her human consort, Heath, she will never be the same – and her relationship with her super-hot-warrior, Stark, may never be the same either…

And what about Stevie Rae and Rephaim?  The Raven Mocker refuses to be used against Stevie Rae, but what choice does he have when no one in the entire world, including Zoey, would be okay with their relationship?  Does he betray his father or his heart?
In the pulse-pounding 8th book in the bestselling House of Night series, how far will the bonds of friendship stretch and how strong are the ties that bind one girl’s heart?

After not being super crazy about the last book I am glad to see I enjoyed AWAKENED a tad bit more but i still dont feel that it was on the same page as earlier books. I enjoyed reading about Rephaim, we get to see him really change in AWAKENED and I think he will be a major part of the group as the series continues. I am entirely tired of the whole Neferet situation, it seems to just keep dragging on and on without much going on at all. I'm hoping her deal at the end will make for better stories to come.  I enjoyed the plot ideas, but the execution and dialogue wasn't up to par for me. I'm having a hard time getting excited to continue the series but seeing as I have read the books until now I cant imagine that I wont pick up STOLEN when it comes out, but I really hope the books get better or STOLEN might be the last I read.

Publisher: Razorbill
Across the Universe Book #1
ISBN:   1595143971
ISBN13: 9781595143976
Genre: Young Adult Science Fiction/ Dystopian
Review Copy Source: ARC Win from Frenzy of Noise

A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.
Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE is wonderfully written. The world on Godspeed is unique and engaging. The plot was easy to follow along with and kept me interested from page one. Although the ARC I received had almost 400 pages I found it to be a pretty fast read. Beth did a good job with switching from POV to POV. The characters were great and I had no problem connecting to them and cheering or yelling at them as needed but the plot is the big selling point for ACROSS THE UNIVERSE. This is a great Science Fiction novel that you should pick up if you get the chance. I'm excited to see what comes next for Amy and Elder.

From his small apartment in Austin, Texas, George Zaragosa watches in awe as surreal reports of a bizarre plague flood the national news. Until today, his life as a local theater teacher was stable and ordinary, if overshadowed by the unsolved murder of his beautiful fiancée. Now, hearing how those who died from an unstoppable virus are coming back to life in growing numbers, George knows what he has to do: leave everything behind in the city and get home to San Uvalde, just down the road.

It began in New York City, when the dead arose from the hospitals and morgues, attacking the living and pulling them into their growing hordes. State by state, the nation goes into lockdown, whole cities and towns fight for survival, and George must navigate military roadblocks, FEMA camps, and street thugs to make it home. But most of all, his journey down the road will require him to stave off the horrifying creatures hungering for his flesh. . . .

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Fonda Raine lives for one thing: killing Eric Aruda for slaying her lover. But she'll have to be careful--Eric can set fires with his mind. Seconds from plunging her knife into his heart, an assassin tries to take them both out. Now, she must choose: join forces with the man who's burning through her defenses or go down in flames.

Finally Eric is getting his chance for love. I have always liked Eric and we finally see a totally different side of him from the Hard ass tough guy he has been through out the series. Fonda defiantly isn't who we thought she was and I enjoyed watching her and Eric bring each others true selves out. There is plenty of action, romance and twists to keep you turning the pages. I liked learning all the new info given about the offspring's and how they came to be. I enjoyed reading BURNING DARKNESS but it seemed like nothing really HAPPENED, even though there is a bunch of action it just seemed like they ran, they fought, they ran they fought and that was about it besides the relationship growing. I also found that the ending didn't really correspond with the past experiences of the book, I cant really explain more about what I mean due to spoiling it for you but I'm sure you will understand what I'm talking about after you read it. If you enjoyed the previous books in the Offspring series I'm sure you will still enjoy BURNING DARKNESS.

Sixteen-year-old Maddie Dunn is special, but she needs to figure out how to use her new abilities before somebody else gets hurt. Ganzfield is a secret training facility full of people like her, but it's not exactly a nurturing place.

Every social interaction carries the threat of mind-control.

A stray thought can burn a building to the ground.

And people's nightmares don't always stay in their own heads. But it's still better than New Jersey. Especially once she meets the man of her dreams...

Book One in the Ganzfield series was a fantastic read. The action starts in the first paragraph of the book and although the whole book isn't filled with action the story kept my attention throughout the entire book. I enjoyed reading and learning about all the abilities that are held by G-Positive people and how they train and learn to live in the real world. MINDER is a super fast read and not very long but it defiantly isn't lacking in detail and plot. I'm about to start ADVERSARY and I'm really excited to see where Kate takes us next.

I honestly had no idea if I would like the Ganzfield series when I won ADVERSARY from Paranormal Haven. Kate Kaynak then offered me book one MINDER to review so I put it on my calendar to read them both back to back and I'm so glad I did. Just like MINDER I found ADVERSARY to be a super fast read, not long but full of information and plot. I loved the characters, I really like Maddie and Trevor's devotion and connection to each other. There is passion, danger, thrills and action. Everything Kate writes just flows perfectly, I enjoyed the story and cant wait to read LEGACY.

I gave it 4/5 Stars
